When I read Gulliver's Travels in uni,...+JMJ+ <br /><br />When I read <i>Gulliver's Travels</i> in uni, my professor pointed out that Jonathan Swift takes great pains to make Gulliver as average as possible: he is the third of five children; he grew up in the very middle of England; etc. And that's because extraordinary adventures require an ordinary hero. (I think G.K. Chesterton said something similar.) <br /><br />(Even knowing that, I can be a bit of a hypocrite and criticise Harry Potter for being the most boring character in his own series. But then again, I also believe that Hermione is the real protagonist and Neville is the real hero.
